Summary for 9/19 to 9/25

Hello.  Your teacher was out ill on Friday.  On Tuesday and Thursday I have CTE training I have to attend.

On Friday I asked you to work on Garageband.  Oops.  Turns out that it was not part of the standard install.  I took that exercise out.

For Tuesday and Thursday, I want you to first go to Exercise 5 and take the "quiz" trying to find information about graphic design and intern architect salaries.

When you are done with the "quiz", I want you to start making your own logo.  Use the presentation provided to think about your logo design.  Come up with a fake company or use yourself as a company.  DO NOT COPY OTHER LOGOS.  I know you can draw, I want to see you start to design.  See the assignment for more direction.

You can always email me with questions.

See you next Friday!

Paul

Exercise 6 - Logo Design

Today a client has called in to ask you to design a logo for their business.

You need to design a logo, a business card and letter head.

2.  Pick a business from below or think of your own (you could even do one for yourself as a graphic design company).

3.  On an 8.5" x 11" paper, you will then HAND DRAW 3 versions of the logo you imagine for the business.  I will not grade any of your work until I first grade the hand drawing.  Remember to put your name and grade number on the sheet.

4.  Download the Adobe Illustrator template to put your logo, business card and a letter head.

You must draw everything.  If you use a photo you need to trace over it.

5.  Turn in the file as period#_lastname_firstname_6x

You are being graded on creativity, attention to detail, originality, Adobe Illustration drawing skill and being able to explain some kind of connection between your logo and the business.

Due September 23
25 points: Hand drawing
75 points: Adobe file (Turn in as period#_lastname_firstname_6x)

Potential Client List:  Choose one of the below companies, or come up with your own.

1.  Maine Spray Paint Company:  A company making specialty spray paints that are geared for the urban market (for self proclaimed street artists).
2.  Im Board:  A surf board company out of Hermosa Beach, California.  They were started by a girl surfer who wants to make surf boards and equipment for the female market.
3.  Oro's Gym:  A gym that has a reclaimed building from the barrio in South Tucson and wants a logo they can use to grow the company.
4.  Badger Coffe House:  An alumni group wants to set up a professional coffee house just down the street from Tucson High School and want to use THS mascot for their shop.
5.  Tohono O'Odham Solar:  A start up company that wants to put solar panels on the tops of the big stores and malls in Tucson to help offset power usage, and save those companies money.

Exercise 5 - Graphic Design / Architect Intern salary seek & find

Due by end of class.

Take the Salary "Quiz" found at the link below.  Use the internet and various sites to look up salary data for Graphic Designers both here in Tucson and Los Angeles.

Graphic Design Salary Quiz.

  • Think About:  Do you want a family with children, adequate medical insurance, a nice second home in the mountains, swimming pool, etc?  Are you ready for the management demands you will need to earn that sort of salary?  Are you content living more modestly and earning less?  Having more free time to enjoy with family may mean less salary but a better quality of life, or will it?  Would you rather work in a big city like Phoenix, Los Angeles or NYC and earn more/pay more to live?  Would you rather work in Pinetop/Lakeside, AZ and go fishing nearly every day after work (but make much less let alone even be fortunate to have a job at all!)

The survey is worth 50 points.

Exercise 4 - Map Making

100 Points

Due 9/18

Maps have been a source of information for thousands of years.  Map making is the "world making" on a flat two dimensional surface.  The map maker is more than merely providing information, but as a designer, laying out the lines and objects that will recreate a world for viewers.

Below are two examples of maps made in Adobe Illustrator:

1.  Reid Park Zoo

2.  British Road Map by Designer Chris Spooner (The Monster guy)

Your assignment is to make a map in Adobe Illustrator.

Your map must include the following:  A title, at least 3 buildings (or structures), some text in a box, more than a couple colors giving the map life.

Here are some ideas if you cannot think of anything...
1.  Washington D.C. National Mall (Between the Washington Monument and Capitol Building)
2.  Teotihicuan, Mexico
3.  Tucson High School
4.  Tatooine (City of Mos Eisley)
5.  Park Place Mall

Demonstrate:
Layers, shape drawing, fill/stroke, text

Turn in the file as period#_lastname_firstname_4x

Update to Self Portrait - Gradient, Transparent, Feather

Today I will demonstrate how to add gradients, opacity changes and some feathering to your objects.  You may want to use this to soften your coloring in your self portrait.
